Designed by famed architect Emery Roth and modeled after the Duke of Devonshire’s royal estate in London, the historic Devonshire House offers classic style as well as contemporary design. This 1928 building in lovely Greenwich Village has been totally modernized to offer luxurious condominium living. The English detailing, Italianate motif, and period details are enhanced with the sophisticated interior design provided by award-winning designer, Victoria Hagan.
Indeed, the Devonshire family crest is still sculpted on doors and inscribed on door knobs at Devonshire House. The period details have been restored to the facade and the building’s new emblem reflects one of Roth’s original lobby motifs. The Devonshire House lobby with its Elizabethan motif, stained glass windows, and faux bois period paneling, has been restored to replicate its original grand style.
The courtyard, a traditional English country garden, designed by landscape architect Edmund Hollander, is another luxurious feature which connects this building to its historic past. Residents can relax in the parterre garden with its flowers, hedges, stone benches, and bluestone walkway.
The garden is visible from the lobby and each of the apartments. Located at 28 East 10th Street and sporting brown brick and terrific terra cotta, Devonshire House is one of the most decorative buildings within Greenwich Village. Roth believed that buildings should look beautiful from any angle. He was the first to incorporate rooftop water tanks into design - rather than leaving them to exposed view.
Innovative design is also evident in the recent restoration. These condos weren’t designed with a cookie cutter approach and each unit has an unique, elegant style. Spacious and light-filled, courtesy of custom Pella windows, the residences feature 4″ sawn white oak wood flooring using Jacobean stain. They also have custom-designed mouldings and E.R.Butler & Co. brass hardware - providing a deep contrast to the white flooring.
With custom-made cabinetry, glass, and steel, the kitchens introduce a cool, modern setting for cooking, dining, and entertaining guests. The counters, topped with composite glass, are set against a marble tile backsplash. There is a Waterworks farmhouse sink fitted with a polished nickel gooseneck faucet. A SubZero refrigerator and a brushed-steel Wolf range with hood complete this elegant yet contemporary look. There is a Bosch dishwasher and larger units have Bosch washers and dryers.
The bathroom floors are surfaced with basketweave Thassos floors with ming dot tiles. The shower walls use pure glass Ann Sacks Metro Crisp tiles. There are custom vanities with marble countertops as well as marble washstands with nickel Lefroy Brooks faucets. Every bathtub - either Neptune, Waterworks, or Kohler - also uses similar faucets. All master bathrooms have radiant heat flooring.
This luxurious condo lifestyle includes a 24-hour doorman, a concierge, porters, as well as a resident superintendent available to all residents. This luxury residence also has a landscaped roof deck, common recreational facilities, and a children’s playroom. There are individual storage units and a secure bicycle room.
Situated in a serene central location and steps from eclectic shopping and fine dining, this interesting neighborhood, with its international flavor, can offer a diverse cultural experience. This classic building is just across from University Place and is near at least 3 neighborhood schools - PS 3 Charrette School (K-5), PS 41 Greenwich Village (K-5), and Simon Baruch Middle School (Ms 104 (6-8). Residents can also enjoy strolling through Greenwich Village enjoying its narrow streets, lush greenery, and profuse flowers.
Developed by the Cheshire Group, these luxury units range in size from 806-square-foot one bedrooms to 2720-square-foot four-bedroom homes. Residences at Devonshire House begin at $1,050,000. An 840 square ft. condo with 1 bed-1 bath costs $1,3000,000. An 1534 square ft. apartment with 2 beds-2 baths is priced at $2,050,000. The duplex penthouses, with private terraces, start at 1321 square feet. A 2720 square ft. penthouse with 4 beds-3.5 baths will cost $4,750,000.
