Devonshire House

Designed by famed architect Emery Roth and modeled after the Duke of Devonshire’s royal estate in London, the historic Devonshire House offers classic style as well as contemporary design. This 1928 building in lovely Greenwich Village has been totally modernized to offer luxurious condominium living. The English detailing, Italianate motif, and period details are enhanced with the sophisticated interior design provided by award-winning designer, Victoria Hagan.
Indeed, the Devonshire family crest is still sculpted on doors and inscribed on door knobs at Devonshire House. The period details have been restored to the facade and the building’s new emblem reflects one of Roth’s original lobby motifs. The Devonshire House lobby with its Elizabethan motif, stained glass windows, and faux bois period paneling, has been restored to replicate its original grand style.

The bathroom floors are surfaced with basketweave Thassos floors with ming dot tiles. The shower walls use pure glass Ann Sacks Metro Crisp tiles. There are custom vanities with marble countertops as well as marble washstands with nickel Lefroy Brooks faucets. Every bathtub - either Neptune, Waterworks, or Kohler - also uses similar faucets. All master bathrooms have radiant heat flooring.

Potential problems at The Devonshire: The tenants’ association is contesting the conversion plan on warehousing grounds. This could postpone any sales from closing and even prevent the owners from selling apartments for years to come. The tenants’ association is in possession of an engineer’s report they commissioned. This report exposes serious conditions in the building that possibly will rise in time to haunt buyers. This report is leaked to interested parties. Aesthetics aside, anyone can see the shoddy work done on the lobby floor - cheap and mismatched tiles were laid unevenly and already started to crack. The old water/ drainage systems that will keep serving the rental units runs through the renovated apartments. This could potentially expose the buyers to the risks of well documented leaks and mold. Same for the old electric supply that will remain buried in the walls.
